Over the more than 100-year history of studying Paleolithic sites on Mount Athos, the scientific literature has established the idea that their materials are the "standard" of the late Siberian Paleolithic. Studies by I. T. Savenkov at the end of the 19th century, N. K. Auerbach, G. P. Sosnovsky [1932] , and V. I. Gromov [1932, 1949] marked the beginning of the wide popularity of these monuments [Astakhov, 1999].
Since 1992, the Laboratory of Archaeology and Paleogeography of Central Siberia of the Institute of Ethnography and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Laboratory of Archaeology of the Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical University have been conducting comprehensive archaeological surveys on Mount Athos. During this period, the site of the Afontova Gora V site (1996 - 1997) dating back to the Kargin-Early Spartan period was discovered and investigated, as well as comprehensive studies of Afontova Gora II were conducted.
The data obtained in recent years do not so much supplement the already published materials as significantly correct the scientific world's established ideas about the stratigraphy of Paleolithic sites on Mount Athos, the nature and features of industrial complexes, economic specialization and spiritual life of the ancient inhabitants of this mountain (Drozdov and Artemyev, 1995; Artemyev and Drozdov, 1998; Artemyev, 1999)..

Its relative height above the Yenisei is 76 m. Geological section (Fig. 2) in general, the following (description by V. P. Chekhov):
