SOME RESULTS OF DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL STUDY OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL WOOD FROM PSKOV EXCAVATIONS
The dendrochronological study of wood from the archaeological excavations of Pskov was initiated about 40 years ago by N. B. Chernykh. The work resulted in the first Pskov dendrochronological scale, which initially had the extreme points of 788 and 1459, and was later extended to 1747. To date, the collection of samples of Pskov archaeological wood totals 3,336 units, including 1,990 dated. The dendrochronological collections come from 40 excavations located in various parts of the city. Every field season, the collections of cuttings are replenished, and the replenishment is mainly due to samples from layers of the XV-XIX centuries, which gives hope both for expanding the chronological framework of the scale and for making adjustments to the weakest areas of the XVII - XVIII centuries. Keywords: Pskov, Sredny Gorod, Zapskovye, Polonishche, archaeological excavations, collections of archaeological wood, dendrochronological research. Archaeological excavations have been actively conducted in Pskov since 1912. For almost a century of archaeological study of the city, more than 100 thousand m2 of the cultural layer of the X - XIX centuries has been studied. Its thickness, together with ballast deposits within the city limits, varies from 0.4 to 6.8 m, which is due to differences in the original microrelief, as well as measures for modern construction and improvement of the city in later periods. Archaeological research allowed not only to study significant areas, but also to draw a number of important conclusions about the topography and history of the ancient and medieval city. The original settlement was located on a promontory between the Velikaya and Pskov Rivers. Subsequently, the city developed in mesopotamia, where for several centuries five lines of fortifications were built; the last one, at the end of the XV century, also protected the posad in Zapskovye (Fig. 1). The dendrochronological study of wood from the archaeological excavations of Pskov was initiated ... Read more
