For millions of fans, footballers seem like superhumans living on nothing but protein shakes and chicken breast. But the truth, as always, is more complex. Behind the strict regimen and diet prescribed by club nutritionists, there are little weaknesses, favorite childhood dishes, and forbidden pleasures that athletes sometimes allow themselves. What do the best players in the world eat and drink? Where is the line between benefit and pleasure? Let's take a look at the kitchens of football stars.
The diet of a professional footballer is governed by one goal: quick energy, muscle recovery, and maintaining an optimal weight. The basis of the diet consists of: complex carbohydrates (oatmeal, brown rice, whole-grain bread, pasta made from hard wheat) for energy; proteins (chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu for vegans) for recovery; healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil); plenty of vegetables and fruits (sources of vitamins and antioxidants). Club chefs and nutritionists calculate the calorie content and composition individually. Hydration: up to 3 liters of water a day, isotonic drinks (sugar-free). Excluded: trans fats (fast food), excess sugar (soda, confectionery), alcohol (except for holidays).
Messi has long adhered to the traditional Argentine diet, but after moving to PSG and Inter Miami, he adjusted his diet. His favorite dish is asado (grilled meat). This can be beef, chorizo, blood sausage. Leo prefers to eat meat with salad and vegetables. He also loves pasta, especially with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese. Sweet: ice cream (caramel sundae) — his weakness. Once a week (usually after a match) he allows himself pizza (thin crust, mozzarella cheese, basil). Drinks: mate (Paraguayan tea) — his passion, as well as good Argentine wine (red) on holidays.
Ronaldo is known for his iron discipline. His diet is one of the strictest. He eats in small portions 6 times a day, avoids sugar, alcohol, and processed foods. His favorite dish is bacalhau (salted cod) in Portuguese style, but his "specialty" is octopus. Ronaldo often orders it in restaurants. He prefers boiled octopus with olive oil, potatoes, and greens. For meat, he prefers simple grilled chicken breast. Sweetness is replaced with fruits (strawberries, blueberries) and rice cakes with honey. Drinks: only water and freshly squeezed juices. Coffee — black, without sugar. Alcohol — rarely, a glass of dry port wine on Christmas.
Ibrahimovic loves everything extravagant. His favorite dishes are "Tartare" steak (minced raw beef with capers, onions, egg yolk) and black caviar. Ibrahimovic does not hide that he can afford a jar of caviar for 500 euros. At the same time, he also loves simple Italian cuisine: pasta with truffles, risotto with seafood. For meat, he prefers grilled lamb with rosemary. Sweetness is Swedish cinnamon rolls (kanelbullar) — nostalgia for home. Drinks: Swedish pear soda "Päron" (pear) and champagne (favorite — Dom Pérignon). He does not drink beer, considering it calorie-rich.
Neymar loves Brazilian cuisine. His breakfast: acai juice (berry) with granola and banana. For lunch — feijoada (black beans with meat, sausage, smoked meats) but in a light version. His favorite snack is pão de queijo (cheese buns) and coxinha (fried shrimp). Neymar is not averse to sometimes eating a burger with fries (he owns a fast food chain). But club nutritionists limit this. Sweetness: Brazilian sweets with condensed milk (brigadeiro). Drinks: coconut water (daily), green grape juice, as well as cachaça (cocktail with cachaca, lime, sugar) — rarely, after victories.
Mbappé adheres to the Mediterranean diet. His favorite dish is classic macaroni with cheese (Parmesan) and black pepper. He can eat pasta every day, varying the sauces: tomato, pesto, creamy with salmon. Fish — sea perch, dorado, baked with vegetables. Meat — chicken and turkey, rarely beef (ribeye steak). Sweetness — French crêpes with strawberry jam and Nutella (for breakfast after the game). Drinks: plain water, juices, as well as energy drinks (rarely). Alcohol is avoided.
Norwegian Erling Haaland shocked the public by revealing that he eats... brain and heart, washed down with milk. This is part of his special diet aimed at maximum strength. He also consumes 6000 calories a day (the average person — 2000). His favorite dishes are beef steak (rare), salmon steamed, an omelet with 10 eggs. Sweetness — Norwegian chocolate "Freia". Drinks — milk (about 2-3 liters a day), smoothies with berries. Alcohol — does not drink. Haaland explains: "I'm like a bull, I need iron and protein."
The Croatian veteran is famous for his longevity. The secret is simple, fresh food without excess. His favorite dish: baked sea perch with potatoes and spinach. Asparagus (white and green) — a separate passion. Modrić also loves risotto with seafood (calamari, mussels). For breakfast — oatmeal with berries. Sweetness — baked apples with honey. Drinks: water, mate, tea (green). Coffee — only in the morning. Alcohol — a glass of red wine on his birthday.
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane (Senegalese) strictly observe halal. Salah loves Egyptian ful (bean puree), kushar (rice, pasta, chickpeas with tomato sauce), and jujja (fried chicken). Mane prefers Senegalese thieb (fish with rice, vegetables, and spicy sauce). Both are happy to eat lamb and lamb ribs. Sweetness — dates, figs, oriental sweets (lokum). Drinks: carcade (hibiscus tea), Zamzam water (holy water from Mecca), but more often — ordinary water. Alcohol is not consumed at all.
Most footballers avoid: fried in oil (french fries, chicken wings), white sugar and sweet soda (Coca-Cola, Fanta), white bread and pastries, sausages, mayonnaise, snacks (chips). But once a week or on special occasions (birthday, major victory) it is permissible to break the regimen. It is no secret that Lionel Messi loves cola, and Ronaldo sometimes eats a pack of cookies. The main thing is not to overdo it.
Footballers are also people, and they have their own gastronomic weaknesses that do not always coincide with dietary recommendations. But it is the balance — a strict regimen and small joys — that allows them to stay in shape for many years. Perhaps the secret of success is not only genetics and perseverance, but also the ability to enjoy life, not forgetting about work.
