Period 1914-1920 the history of Latvia is very rich in various kinds of events. In 1914-1918, the front of the First World War took place on its territory, in 1917 the February bourgeois-democratic Revolution broke out, and in the autumn of the same year, the October Socialist Revolution won on the territory not occupied by the Germans, although for a short time. In 1918, the Latvian people fought for the restoration of Soviet power, which was suppressed by the German invaders. At the beginning of 1919, Soviet power was restored in Latvia and the Socialist Soviet Republic of Latvia was established. Formed in November 1918 by the imperialist Powers, the Latvian puppet bourgeois government fled to Liepaja. In 1919, the imperialist powers launched a military intervention in the Baltic States and, with the help of the local bourgeoisie, suppressed Soviet power there. In the same year, because of the Baltic States, the contradictions between Germany and the Entente countries became more acute. Twice German troops tried to seize the Baltic States by force of arms, but each time they were defeated. The book reviewed by E. Anderson , one of the Latvian white emigrant bourgeois historians, is devoted to the study of these events. In 1943. he graduated from the University of Riga, emigrated in 1944, lived for some time in West Germany, then in America.
Promising to cover this important period in the history of Latvia truthfully and flawlessly, E. Anderson points out that his main attention is paid to international and military problems, while he deals with domestic and economic issues only in order "to clarify Latvia's position in international events" (p. 7).
